Rail Canteen at Sunway Nexis Kota Damansara

Rail Canteen located at Sunway Nexis, Kota Damansara

I didn’t take me long to agree to have my dinner at Rail Canteen with a few foodies. Rail Canteen was not far, just located at Sunway Nexis, Kota Damansara. I got to confess on that night we swamped the Rail Canteen in looking for good homegrown local food and I enjoyed what was paraded on my table.

Rail Canteen’s Menu

The Rail Canteen is part of the Kluang Train Station, southern famous heritage eatery that operated since 1938. They are known for their Kluang Kopi, Nasi Lemak, Meehoon Siam, Mee Rebus and Mee Kari and now make available at The Rail Canteen.

Here the Rail Canteen’s menu is extensive and a lot to pick from. On their nasi lemak selection for example, one can choose the type of chicken to go with their nasi lemak: ayam goreng, ayam rendang, ayam berempah and even a portion of ayam masak merah. Not only being spoiled with the protein even a variation of ‘sambal’ chili jam is make available too: onion, prawn, anchovy, cockle and cuttlefish.

Honey Passion Ice, Kopi Ice and Dragon Passion Ice

The Kopi Ice was just the perfect drink for me as the flavour was bold and the aroma was pretty awesome. I do have a great liking for local brewed coffee as most is hand-roasted to perfection. I also ordered their Kopi O Ice.

Honey Passion Ice was juicy and refreshing while Dragon Passion Ice was interestingly good too. Both of drinks can be addictive and likeable especially being paired with dishes like nasi lemak and kari mee.

Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah

Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah here at Rail Canteen consist of a nice fluffy coconut milk rice accompanied by hard boiled egg, cucumber slice, chili jam, fried peanuts, anchovies and a nice piece of “ayam berempah” deep fried spiced chicken. The “ayam berempah” was fried to perfection, slightly crisp of the outside and the chicken was truly moist. I am sure this “ayam berempah” will be frequent here at Rail Canteen. As for sambal, we were definitely spoiled with choices and it was a task to pick as all the sambal was really delicious: bawang, kerang, ikan bilis, udang and sotong.

Sambal Bawang, Kerang, Ikan Bilis, Udang, Sotong

Mutton Rendang

We tried the mutton rendang and it was very well crafted. The mutton cubes were perfectly tender and soft. The nearly dried curried spiced gravy too came bursting with flavour and had coated the mutton well. It was juicy. Having it with rice is a must.

Meehoon Siam

Meehoon Siam, a plate of nice and delicate spicy rice vermicelli that came with hard boiled egg, sambal, sliced fried egg and crisp fried shallot was a simple and very fulfilling to have. Everyone enjoyed it and I loved it.

Meehon Kari

The Meehoon Kari seated just in front of me looked really good an rich. I got to agree that the curry broth was thick and the colour of curry was truly inviting. The topping itself too looked good too, dried tofu and shredded chicken. The flavouring was good indeed and definitely it was hard to resist of not having a few helpings.

Mee Rebus

The Mee Rebus here at The Rail Canteen is cooked the southern way. and it was flooded with rich gravy and topping. I am not a great lover that love to romance with Mee Rebus but the mee rebus here was well prepared and taste pretty good.

Hainanese Chicken Chop

The Hainanese Chicken Chop too was on the Rail Canteen menu. The portion was great. The chicken chop was given a deep fried coating and the outer had a nice crisp texture while the inside came moist and tended. The accompanied sauce paired so well with the chicken. I also found baked beans and potato chips on my plate. It was nice.

Bun Sambal Special

It was exciting to try out their simple bun sambal special too. It was interesting to have. Something spicy over a bun can be truly very inviting. I found it really addictive and interesting. Definitely a nice snack to have over a break.

Roti Bakar

Roti Bakar at Rail Canteen was surprising good and delicious. Two toasted pieces of white bread sandwiched with generous butter and kaya took my breath away. It was so good an left me speechless. I just loved the spread of rich sweet kaya and I suspected the gula Melaka was present to enhance the taste. For sure a piece of this so called roti bakar can easily tame me for a minute of two be for I get wild.

Kopi Chendol Ais and 3-Layer Ice Cream

I missed tasting the kopi Chendol Ais and the 3 layer ice cream but was informed that both was very likeable.

Kopi Cheesecake

The Kopi Cheesecake was interesting one, it was dense and packed with nice hinted kopi aroma. Rich and a hint of bitterness caught my attention.

The Rail Canteen here is definitely the place to be pampered over with a good plate a nasi lemak and a cup of kopi ice. Mee Siam, Mee Kari and Mee Rebus too make it onto the top list. The Roti Bakar here too is done to perfection and so irresistible. Kopi O ice one please!
