Philips Sonicare AirFloss to Maintain A Dazzling Healthy Smile

Having a healthy smile and a set of pearly whites well into your golden years should be the aim of everyone. Sadly, oral health has taken the backseat in the minds of Malaysians, resulting in them neglecting the health of their mouth, teeth and gums. Without proper care and if left unchecked, the bacteria in the mouth can lead to oral infections such as tooth decay and gum disease.

According to the 2010 National Oral Health Survey of Adults conducted by the Oral Health Division in the Ministry of Health Malaysia, 52.4% of Malaysians believe that they have good oral health. But in actuality, a shocking 98.3% of Malaysians were in need of oral healthcare. 88.9% were reported to have dental caries, 94% had gum problems and 7.3% had lost all their natural teeth.

Attaining a healthy set of whites and gums can be achieved through a thorough routine of flossing and brushing but for some people, it is easier said than done. Although brushing is a must, it does not completely remove the food debris and bacterial plaque that may accumulate between the teeth, whereas flossing can help remove this plaque and debris.

“There are not a lot of oral devices and products in the market that encourage the flossing habit, leaving consumers with limited options. With the launch of the Philips Sonicare AirFloss, we want to encourage Malaysians to make flossing a part of their daily oral healthcare practice by making it convenient, quick and pain-free,” says Muhammad Ali Jaleel, Country Manager for Philips Group of Companies in Malaysia and General Manager, Consumer Lifestyle for Philips Malaysia.

“The majority of the bacterial plaque that forms in the mouth is caught between the teeth. Flossing is the only way to clean out the plaque from these tight gaps,” said Datuk Dr Sean Paul, a dentist from LivingWell Cosmetic & General Dentistry, who has more than 15 years of experience. “As 90% of dental problems often arise from the accumulating plaque, it is important to floss properly every day,” he said.

According to Dr Sean, “Especially for those who wear braces or have had complex restorative treatment done, a well-designed oral healthcare routine is vital. They have added difficulty in cleaning their mouth of plaque as they have more hard-to-reach spaces, nooks and crannies where food debris and bacterial plaque can build up, leading to oral diseases. This is why efficient flossing is so important, to get to these hard to reach spaces and remove all traces of food and plaque.”

Some people have expressed concerns on flossing due to their gums bleeding when they first started flossing. Little do they know that, with continued of flossing in their daily oral care routine, gums can be nursed back to good health over time and this reduces the bleeding in due time. “Bleeding gums are often indications of gum disease. Flossing once daily in addition to regular brushing can help reverse the early stages of gum disease by removing the bacterial plaque and allowing your gums to recover,” added Dr Sean.

To help you start adding regular flossing into your oral healthcare routine, Philips Malaysia has introduced a new flossing technology in its Sonicare range. The Philips Sonicare AirFloss uses breakthrough microdroplet technology specially designed to make cleaning in between teeth as easy as possible while maximising plaque removal and improving gum health. It works by using a rapid burst of air and water droplets to force plaque and bacteria out. This can be particularly important for people who have had dental work done, such as braces or crowns.

The rapid burst of air and water from the Philips Sonicare AirFloss is directed using a nozzle guidance tip that ensures targeted cleaning between teeth and the simple operations means you can floss your entire mouth in a minute, while using just one teaspoon of water for one full cleaning session.
